Latin I (8*-12)

Though rarely spoken today, Latin was the primary language of the West from ancient times through the end of the nineteenth century and is the source of all Romance languages (incl. Spanish, French, Italian, and Portuguese). Most of the vast body of Latin literature has not been translated, and much has not been translated accurately. In order to make all this literature accessible, the aim of this course is to give the student competence in the foundations of Latin grammar and vocabulary. Besides, learning Latin is all about solving puzzles and is really a lot of fun! The workload consists of in-class verbal and written exercises; weekly in-class quizzes; and homework submitted twice weekly (in person or by e-mail). Our required textbook is Frederic M. Wheelock, Wheelock’s Latin, 6th ed. (New York: HarperCollins Publishers, Inc., 2000). Photocopied materials are supplied in class, and there is a $5.00 materials fee.

* If your child is younger, and you believe they have the maturity to benefit from this class, please approach the teacher to discuss your situation.
