Music / Grades 5-12 / Period 6 / RP / 1T-2T-3T
Beginning Band (5–12)
In this class students will begin learning the basics of playing a band instrument (brass, percussion, or woodwind), and will develop the skills to read and play music in an ensemble. No prior instrumental experience is needed. Children who have already begun an instrument may register, but they need to be aware that the class is mostly geared toward those who have never played a band instrument before. This class will be graded only for those students in grades 9–12. The homework for this class will be to practice one’s instrument every day (M–F). Minimal homework may be given to reinforce music theory necessary for reading music.
Students must provide their own instrument and lesson book. The lesson book we will be using is Essential Elements for Band, Book 1. Here is an example of the book you should order (please order the book appropriate for your instrument): https://www.amazon.com/Essential-Elements-2000-Book-Flute/dp/0634003119/.
During the summer, we will hold an instrument test day where representatives from Quinlan and Fabish (the local music store) will be available to help students decide on an instrument to play and assist the student to rent one.
