First Trimester High School Literature: Romanticism to Realism Students will read, discuss, analyze and write about classic essays, short stories and novellas by significant American authors such as Emerson, Thoreau, Poe, Melville, Hawthorne, Twain, Bierce, and London. Emphasis will be placed on the elements of literature, literary devices, and simple enjoyment of the works. There will be responsive writing assignments. Grading will be based on participation in class discussion, completing study guides and responsive writing, as well as a final trimester test or oral presentation. All readings will be available through the internet.

Second Trimester High School Literature: American Poetry Students will read, discuss, analyze and write about the works of significant American poets. Emphasis will be placed on analyzing poetry, literary devices, and thoughtful enjoyment of the works. Grading will be based on participation in class discussion, completing study guides and responsive writing, as well as a final trimester test or oral presentation.

Third Trimester High School Literature: 20th Century Novels Students will read, discuss, analyze and write about significant novels of the modern era. Novels will be selected and announced before the 3rd trimester. Emphasis will be placed on authors, themes, and literary devices. There will be several responsive writing assignments. Grading will be based on participation in class discussion, completing study guides and responsive writing, as well as a final trimester test or oral presentation.
