Middle School Writing

$95.00

Writing / Grades 6-8 / Period 1 / KW / 1T

This writing course is intended for those in the middle school years. Whether this is your first time taking a writing course or you are proficient with the IEW program, this course will hone your writing skills as you explore simple paragraphs, writing from pictures, expository writing, persuasive writing, and essay writing.  The role of the instructor at this level is to be their teacher and to provide positive yet thorough writing assistance.

Using elements from both the Institute for Excellence in Writing (IEW) and The Lost Tools of Writing (TLTW) programs, students will experience ways to further develop both their creative- and their report-writing skills. With the stylistic elements of the IEW program, students practice with key-word outlines and rough drafts. They will learn to edit those rough drafts before writing a final paper.

Using elements from TLTW program, students will learn how to complete an ANI chart which allows them to think through the affirmative (A), the negative (N), and the interesting (I) aspects of an issue. Students will have to think critically as they practice expressing their ideas persuasively. A by-product of this program is that it creates critical readers because it allows them to quickly recognize such persuasive techniques in what they read. Also, the basics of presenting speeches will be introduced. Students will experiment with the power of voice inflections, pauses, gestures, position, eye-contact, and more!

It is expected that students have a basic understanding of English grammar and spelling with legible handwriting skills.

Come join the fun and learn alongside your friends and enhance your writing and speaking  skills this year!
