Writing / Grades 3-5 / Period 5 / HM5 / 1T-2T-3T

This course is an introduction to writing for beginners, using the Institute for Excellence in Writing (IEW) program, moving students from summarizing to inventive writing on topics of their choice. Beginning with identifying keywords and creating an outline, the students will learn how to gather information from source texts. Then they will learn to transform that information into meaningful reports, stories, and essays. Students enrolling in this course should understand what a complete sentence is and have had some writing experience. Reluctant writers welcome! Weekly assignments will be from one to five paragraphs long. This is a graded course. It is highly recommended that students take all three trimesters of this course to fully develop the necessary skills for writing.
